more than we ever wanted – it’s that he has high expectations. He’s not trying to just make a little raise on last year’s team GPA. “But I can guarantee you that with a degree, they have a chance to be a professional in some field, so it’s better to be prepared, no matter what the future may hold for these guys.” I bet the political science teachers love him. All jokes aside, the expectation of straight A’s from every player with no exception smells a little fruity.

Not necessarily for himself, but always for those that he coaches. In a little article posted on Texas Tech’s website this week, which was aimed at promoting the school’s academic efforts for their athletes, Clyde kicked things up a notch. You know how we say Cal puts stuff out there for recruits and it’s brilliant? So is Clyde crazy in a good way or still crazy in the sort of way that puts Mark Coury in the starting lineup and tells half the team they aren’t traveling to a game before laughing it off and taking them?

Gillispie used the time away from coaching to make lifestyle changes, reportedly checking into a rehabilitation clinic after a drunken driving arrest shortly after his dismissal at Kentucky.

“We hope that we can bring in good enough players that they have the opportunity to be a professional basketball player,” continued Gillispie. Of course, as one person pointed out on Twitter, Clyde might be in great shape if he can just recruit three guys that can make straight A’s and then they can recruit three guys that can make straight A’s and then they can recruit three guys that can make straight A’s and….get the point.

“What does it for me is having the everyday grind of trying to make someone get better in a real big hurry.” After two years in the private sector, Gillispie is back as the new coach at Texas Tech.

He is one of four new coaches in the Big 12, though he is a familiar face after coaching three years at Texas A&M.

He visited coaching buddies like Doc Sadler and Bill Self and stood on the sidelines for Oklahoma football practices.

None of it brought him any satisfaction.“That doesn’t do it for me,” Gillispie said.
